Nature Play Locations
Meeting of the Waters
Parking: Meeting of the Waters Scenic Reserve Carpark off of SH3
Play Spot: Please carefully follow the track along the Waiwhakaiho river towards the Araheke Bush Walk (near TOPEC). We meet just after the bridge. This section of track is exposed to the moving water, so please be mindful of little ones on foot.
Toilets: No
Added notes: There are several access points to moving water at this location. Please make sure to actively monitor your child near water at all times. Spare clothing and a towel highly recommended!
Lucy's Gully - Waimoku Redwoods
Parking: Lucy's Gully Picnic Area
Play Spot: Follow the track (through the small gate closest to the picnic area) for about 150m up to where the redwood trees open up.
Toilets: Yes, at carpark.
Added notes: There are no water features at this location, but tamariki do love to explore and there are some steep sections nearby where we play.
Adam's Point - Te Henui
Parking: Spencer Place road end/carpark
Play Spot: Walk south on the main Te Henui track (if you cross the big bridge, you've gone the wrong way). About 200m up the track there is a sign pointing to the right down to Adam's Point.
Toilets: No
Added notes: There are several access points to moving water at this location. Please make sure to actively monitor your child near water at all times. Spare clothing and a towel highly recommended!
Back Beach
Parking: The lower carpark has the closest access, but you may need to use the mid carpark and walk down the short track if the lower lot is full.
Play Spot: We'll play just across the Herekawe stream outlet.
Toilets: Located at the mid carpark
Added notes: Beach play days are chosen to be timed with low tide. That said, please actively monitor your child at all times when near water. We recommend dressing your little one to be in the water (wetsuit or togs, change of clothing, warm layers, etc.)
Huatoki Domain
Parking: Huatoki Tennis Club
Play Spot: Walk down the paved track to the grassy area just below the carpark.
Toilets: No
Added notes: This area is frequently used by dog walkers and people commuting to town. Please be mindful that there may be off-leash dogs that wander into our play area from time to time.
Ratapihipihi
Parking: End of Ratapihipihi Road off of Cowling Road. Please park to the side of Ratapihipihi road and be mindful that the lot fills up quickly with our group. You may have to park on Cowling and walk a short ways.
Play Spot: Enter Ratapihipihi and meander to the right. We play just in the ngahere where the shelters are built.
Toilets: No
Added notes: There are no water sources nearby at this location, but plenty of amazing forest space for tamariki to explore.
Lake Mangamahoe
Parking: Front carpark on the main Lake Mangamahoe access road.
Play Spot: Follow the gravel double track about 50m down to the big grass area in the redwoods.
Toilets: Yes, on road at entry
Added notes: This play area is next to the lake, so there is potential for little ones to try and access the water. We will bring large tubs of water up to the grass area for tamariki to use in their play, as the access points are not shallow enough to encourage free play.
Pukeiti Gardens
This location caters to a "Nature Play / Whanau Tramping" hybrid session. We will not have our usual equipment and activities, and instead will venture on a super short walk to explore the immediate gardens, tree forts, sculptures and more.
*Term 4, 2024 - Taranaki Kiwi Trust will be providing a free mini workshop for tamariki ages 0-6yrs of age on Kiwi Tracking. This will be a fun, education event for whanau!
Parking: main Pukeiti carpark
Play Spot: We will meet at the main entrance of the gardens next to the centre.
Toilets: Yes, in the main building
Cafe: Open Wednesday - Sunday from October 1st
